Declaration of the Rights of Teacher

I reserve my right

to silent reading

and to a chipped mug, red

with the ‘Boro arms.

I reserve my right

to a frayed, yellow collar

and to spider-written busy work

in a coronary hour.

I reserve my right

to count the minute’s passing

and to read your stories

in a voice of my choosing.

I reserve my right

to see a fat teardrop

in the marble you hold up

to eclipse your eye from mine.

I reserve my right

to picture you kempt,

ungrey and minted

from love.

I reserve my right

to watch you read in silence,

as you compass-carve the desk

with the ‘Boro arms.
